The A to Z of Career Success - K

A warm welcome into my A to Z of career success series where we have now moved onto the letter K. Today we are going to look at 4 more ways to improve your career success with a focus on kick-starting your 2021.

Killer questions for your career (at the end of 2020)

Asking yourself insightful questions can open up some new thinking in your career. Here are some killer questions to ask yourself at the end of 2020. Let’s start with a simple one:
  • Do you still enjoy your job? If not …
  • What could you do to enjoy your job more? What changes could you make? (Big or small)
  • What does your career direction look like? Which way are you heading? And …
  • How can you make that destination more attractive whilst enjoying your job even more right now?
These are simple questions, which can bring you more enjoyment and satisfaction at work.

Knock knock – the sound of opportunity

Opportunities can come your way at any time in your career. However, opportunity favours the prepared. To make opportunities more likely for you here are some things that you can do in 2021:
  • Invest in your own learning and self-development
  • Share your knowledge with others. You will be giving something back and strengthening your network at the same time
  • Get yourself a mentor to help you become more visible in the organisation and to support your aspirations
  • Get out of your comfort zone! All of your growth occurs outside your comfort zone and this is also the best place to hear the sound of opportunity knocking. 😉

Kick start 2021

There’s a lot we might want to forget about 2020, particularly if the impact of Covid 19 on our career has been significant. Therefore, as 2020 draws to a close, now is the perfect time to kick start your career. To get your career back on track and pointing in the right direction, here are some suggested questions to get you started:

  • What do you want to learn in the coming year?
  • What projects or other work do you want to spend time on in 2021?
  • Where is it time for you to take the next step in your career?
  • What support do you need in the next year?

Keep going

Self-Motivation and the ability to keep going in your career is such an essential factor to your success. Sometimes you have to sustain effort over the long term, perhaps deferring short-term gratification along the way. This doesn’t mean sticking with a job you hate, of course, but to achieve meaningful things with our careers we quite often have to persist. We do this despite the daily and weekly challenges we face.

How can we increase our self-motivation and keep going in our careers, even when we aren’t feeling it?

Action
  • Remember to focus on the big picture of your career, what it is that you want?
  • Break down your goals into smaller and more manageable chunks
  • Reward yourself along the way 🥂
