The A to Z of Career Success - I
A warm welcome into my A to Z of career success series where we have now moved onto the letter I. Today we are going to look at 4 more ways to improve your career success.
Integrity
Integrity is a core value, a stable force within. Integrity is about making the right choice even if it goes against the consensus or where there is no personal gain. It is the way you live and how you act when no one else is watching.
So how do you develop your integrity in the workplace? Here are three tips to help you do that.
Action
- Know who you are, what you stand for, and what your purpose is
- Stay true to what you believe
- Be accountable for your actions, dependable and honest in your dealings
Impact
It’s probably more important to define your career by the impact you want to have than the titles you aspire to. As you progress in your career, the ability to demonstrate your impact at work becomes very attractive to the marketplace. Most interviewees, for example, now look to see the impact you have had in your career, and your ability to communicate this is vital.
The impacts could be projects you have delivered, campaigns that you have managed, or cost efficiencies you have achieved. The additional benefit of this approach is that it is hugely rewarding in your career to have delivered positive impacts for employees, customers, and the community.
Action
- Consistently deliver good work
- If you can, choose work and projects that make a difference
- Share your impact with your colleagues and your wider network
Imagination
Imagination and the ability to see how things could be in your job and career are vitally important. Every new idea or service starts with somebody being able to imagine how this might work. Everything around you started in the imagination of somebody.
Imagination is also vital in decision making, particularly when it comes to your next job and how you can build a great career. If you are not happy in your job, for example, being able to imagine an alternative more attractive option can help you to take steps towards a more satisfying option.
Action
- Take time out in your day-to-day work to imagine how you can improve what you are doing and how it is delivered
- It can also help to put some parameters on your imagination. How can I make this service 10% less expensive? How can I increase customer satisfaction by 50%
- Spend time imagining what your ideal career would be, what would you be doing, and where would you be working?
Industrious
You have probably all heard the quote ‘If you want something done, ask a busy person’. That’s because when you get industrious and get things done, people notice. You get known as somebody that works hard and makes a difference. Career opportunities always favour those that are known to deliver good quality work and lots of it.
Action
- How can you up your work rate and enjoy work more (hint: re-read the Imagination ideas above)
As always, I hope you find these tips helpful and wish you happiness and good health always. Drop me a note and let me know how you are getting on or book a slot in my calendar for a chat. Please also forward this email to anybody that you think might be interested in the content.
