You Hate your job! Now What?
You know that feeling – you detest everything about your job. You spend your weekends dreading Monday morning, and when the working week does come around, you approach your fate with a bleary-eyed resentment.
Everything I do as a coach is about helping you love your job and have a great career. Sometimes this means helping you to deal with a job that's gone bad. I know the feeling, and it's not a good place to be.
On the positive side, however, it's good to know that hating what you do is a powerful emotion and can be used to create powerful change.
Here are 5 ways to deal with a job you're hating and get on track again to find a job you'll love. To be clear, this doesn't involve storming into your boss's office and flinging your resignation across the desk. That only ever works well in the movies!
Here we go:
1. Don't Panic!
Remember, just because you feel stuck in a job you hate doesn't mean you need to stay stuck. Help is at hand.
Pause … Breathe … It's going to be ok …
Think about the other obstacles you have overcome in your life, and remember that you are much more resourceful than you can imagine right now.
Ok, now it's time to …
2. Decide to do something about it 💪
Now you have created the thinking time, give yourself a deadline to do something about it.
The danger here is that the emotional energy which drove you to consider action in the first place will now subside, and you will drop back into that (uncomfortable) rut.
So, give yourself an Action Deadline - and stick to it.
This is a great time to call upon the help & advice from a friend or mentor - they will help you stick to your plan and make suggestions in the next step...
3. Plan out what you want next
You must approach this change as a mini-project.
Think through what you want next in your career:
- What do you want more of?
- What do you want less of?
- What do you want to try?
- What skills would you like to use?
- What would your ideal role be?
You must WRITE IT DOWN so you can review your thoughts and continue to develop your ideas. It's also a good idea to share these ideas with a friend or mentor. They will be able to more easily tune in to your thinking and offer advice in a supportive manner.
4. Don't burn your bridges
Even though you might be feeling bitter towards your organisation, you must remain professional. If you do eventually leave the organisation leaving on good terms, professionally, it is more likely that you will receive a good reference. Your career will be long, so it's important to strengthen your connections whenever you can.
5. Get support if you need it
Sometimes you can't do it all yourself. In which case, seek help from those around you or get professional support.
